J.M.A. Biesheuvel

J.M.A. Biesheuvel (b. 1939) is one of the most productive and most admired storytellers in Dutch literature. This is partly due to his memorable live appearances in countless radio programmes, theatres and television shows reading from his own work in a striking sonorous voice. Biesheuvel's stories are marked by the amiable, ironic way in which he treats autobiographical and religious themes (like many prominent Dutch writers, he comes from a strict religious background). The splendid Moped at Sea in which one of the characters rides a moped across God's waters is one of the most famous examples. The authenticity of the story is doubtless strengthened by the fact that Biesheuval himself served as a sailor for some time. Moped at Sea was published in 1972.

J.M.A. Biesheuvel's short story is part from the anthology "Bittersweet pieces", published by Blesok
