Janis Elsbergs

Janis Elsbergs was born in 1969 in Riga, Latvia. Until recently he published his works under the pen-name Janis Ramba. His mother, the poet Vizma Belsevica, is considered the most eminent figure in Latvian literature. His brother Klavs Elsbergs, ten years his senior, the most popular poet of his generation, died or was murdered at the age of 28 in never clarified and obviously political circumstances. Currently, Janis Elsbergs works as a free-lance author: before that he was the editor for several literary magazines and the President of the Latvian Young Writers’. He translates contemporary American and English authors and, in particular, playwrights, as well as Shakespeare. He has published three volumes of verse which have attracted much attention: "The Purest Thing" (1993), "Morning Coffee" (1996), and "Boulevard Daugavas" (2000). His poems are often translated into English, as well as the Baltic and the Nordic languages.
